Snakes were a visual motif that hit jewellery design with extreme love, excitement and whirlwind force during the Victorian era. Queen Victoria came to the British throne in the 1830s. She proposed to Prince Albert in 1839 and he in turn gave her a snake themed engagement ring. As a result, snakes depicted in Victorian jewellery came to symbolise ‘eternal love, protection, healing and rejuvenation’. They have also been used in jewellery to signify good luck and associated with Ascelpius, the Greco-Roman god of medicine. This Victorian bracelet delight dates to c.1880s. Set in rich 18ct gold with rose cut diamond details to its head and garnet cabochon eyes. The head measures 23 mm by 8 mm. Its silky smooth snake chain body moves beautifully and the clasp closes nice and tight. Bracelet measures 3 mm wide. An exquisite piece of antique English jewellery, perfect to wear on its own or stack with others. Please note the box shown is for demonstration purposes.
